PetTech startup Butternut Box has raised £1m in Seed funding in a round led by Passion Capital.

The London-based firm, founded last year, seeks to change the pet food market by delivering tailored dog meals based on variables such as breed, gender, age and weight.

“People view dogs as part of the family,” said Kevin Glynn, the co-founder, adding: “but often, diet-wise, pets get left behind.

“Pet owners are left choosing their dog food in an aisle cluttered with washing powder and bin bags and dominated by a few unhealthy choices. Butternut Box makes it easy and convenient to ensure dogs get the very best diet tailored for each individual.”

Similarly to other firms in the space, Butternut Box uses proprietary algorithms to come up with the adequate recommendations.

David Nolan, co-founder, added: “We know every dog by name. We know their age, weight, breed, activity levels and body condition. With this information, we can develop meals that meet the dog’s specific needs.”

The startups says it has cooked 250,000 meals since April last year.
